70th Anniversary

The 2026/27 season is a significant moment in the life of the Club.  It marks 70 years of bringing high quality classical chamber music to Bideford and the surrounding communities.

To celebrate this moment in the Club's history, the Committee is undertaking three things which together make a fitting contribution to the Club’s enduring Constitutional principles "to promote, improve, develop and maintain public education and appreciation of the art and science of music".

First, the Committee has asked the artists at each of the six monthly concerts this season to perform a work composed about 70 years ago, in the mid-1950s, when the Club began promoting chamber music concerts in 1957.  So enjoy listening to some younger composers who brought avant-garde experimentation and serialism to the musical scene around that time.

Second, the Committee is arranging a third school performance (in addition to the normal two performances) by a visiting artist this season to inspire at least 700 children (compared with typically 500 children).

Third, the Committee is writing to local charities and organisations for which music is a central theme of their work to invite their members, for free, to the last concert (the Elmore Quartet) of the season.  Taking place at 7.30 pm on Wednesday 7 April 2027 in St Mary's Church Bideford, the evening will be a celebration of the joy of sharing music together as well as fire the starting gun for another 70 years of classical music in the community.
